Ice cream is one of my favorite foods, so I was thrilled to have the chance to design packaging for Paleteria San Marcos, a Texas based frozen-treats company with Mexican roots. The challenge was to create a feel that would be appealing to both Latinos who have eaten these foods since they were young and foodies who are trying something new and gourmet for the first time. The paletas also had to be easy to discern from one another. There are dozens of flavors for the paleteros (ice cream men) to sort through, and they had to be able to tell apart quickly.
My solution was to create a series of illustrations of animals interacting with the various flavors. Color would change from flavor to flavor to compliment the paleta color itself. Typography was inspired by the letterforms found painted on the sides of businesses in Mexico. The result is a dynamic, color-coded packaging system that appeals to the childlike pleasure of eating a popsicle in a fresh, new way.
